Campidoglio The mythological origin of Rome
is based on the legend of the Capitoline
Romulus and Remus.
The story tells that the vestal Rhea Silvia was fertilized by the God Mars,
from whom the twins were born.
Shortly after Numitor,
grandfather of the brothers,
was chased away by
his brother Amuilio who,
to prevent the couple from claiming
had them thrown into the Tiber in a basket.
To find them was the she-wolf,
a sacred animal for the god Mars,
who took care of them until they were found by the shepherd Faustulus.
